According to the figures published by the ASPS for 2015, breast augmentation ranks as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. Although the procedure has become less invasive and less painful over the years due to improvised surgical techniques and new implant qualities, but some risks remains intrinsic to breast augmentation, just like any other surgery.
At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss all the pros and cons and the potential risks involved in breast augmentation. The surgeon’s first priority will be to help the patient make an informed decision. Dr. Brian J. Parker is a dedicated plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and other procedures to patients in Las Vegas and surrounding locations.
Implant-related Risks
A number of risks in breast augmentation plastic surgery are unique to the procedure because of the involvement of breast implants.
Capsular Contracture
Once the breast implants are surgically placed in the breast pocket, the healing mechanism in the body is triggered. Natural scar tissue will form around the implants. In a few cases, the scar tissue may tend to harden or contract, putting excessive pressure on the implants.
The tightening of scar tissue may squeeze the implants, causing them to lose their shape, position or become damaged. Pain may occur as the breast capsule hardens. In such a situation, the surgeon may recommend breast implant removal or replacement surgery.
Implant Rippling
If the larger sized implants are used and the available breast skin is not adequate to cover the implant comfortably, it may cause the implant to develop folds or wrinkles. This creates a rippling effect, distorting the natural breast appearance.
A skilled cosmetic surgeon will be able to minimize the risk of implant rippling by recommending the appropriate implant size and shape. Dr. Parker receives patients from Las Vegas and nearby areas for breast implants.
Implant Shifting or Rupture
In rare cases, the implant may move from its original position soon after the breast augmentation was performed. In case of larger implants, the risk of displacement may increase. The risk of rupture exists in all kinds of implants.
If the rupture occurs in saline implants, the implant will deflate and will become immediately noticeable. However, a silicone implant rupture may only get noticed during an MRI exam. Breast revision surgery may be performed to address these conditions.
Surgery-related Risks
These risks are common to most surgical procedures.
Infection
The risk of infection is inherent during and immediately after the implant surgery. High standards hygiene at the surgical facility can help to minimize this risk. The surgeon will prescribe antibiotics during early recovery phase to mitigate the infection risk during post-op period.
Altered Sensation in Nipples
Numbness, sensitivity, or changed sensation may take place in the nipple area following breast augmentation. While the condition will usually resolve over time on its own, in a few cases, the altered sensation may be prolonged or permanent.
Unfavorable Scarring
Some amount of scarring is inevitable, but the risk can be minimized by placing the incisions in discreet locations such as in the breast crease.
