Although proponents of the “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” philosophy believe that facial attractiveness is determined by a subjective group of characteristics, many scientific researchers today propose that mathematical principles of symmetry are at the root of why human beings see beauty in some faces more so than others.
Finding beauty in symmetrical proportions dates back to the artwork of the ancient Greeks, and continued during the era of the European Renaissance, as prominent architects and artists utilized the symmetry-based “golden ratio” to frame the proportions of their creations in order to render them more aesthetically pleasing.
